What is Coffee Catch-up?

A virtual networking event for dental nurses and fellow dental care professionals for you to meet new colleagues and hear about the latest developments from the world of dentistry, the Association and our special guest speakers with free CPD for a members. The coffee catch-up has been created during the Covid-19 pandemic to offer members and non-member dental care professionals virtual way to the latest information from the world of dentistry, the opportunity for networking and connecting with with other dental nurses across the United Kingdom, and chat with our BADN President, the members of the BADN Executive Committee, and the staff. We also host special guest speakers who deliver valuable insights regarding a specific topic each month with the aim of helping attendees learn and expand their knowledge.

Ken Binnah is a dental care professional and educator with an interest in inclusive practice, communication, and team development within dentistry and dental nursing education. He is committed to raising awareness of neurodiversity, particularly dyslexia, and helping dental teams understand how reasonable adjustments can improve patient care, staff wellbeing, and workplace inclusion. Through this session, Ken aims to support dental nurses in building confidence, compassion, and practical strategies for more inclusive care.

"Neurodiversity with a focus on Dyslexia – DCPs Perspective”

Synopsis

This session explores neurodiversity in dentistry, focusing on understanding dyslexia in both patients and colleagues. It challenges common misconceptions and highlighting the strengths and challenges associated with dyslexia. It will also explain how inclusive communication and reasonable adjustments can improve patient safety, teamwork, and overall care.

Objectives

  1. Define neurodiversity and explain how dyslexia fits within it.
  2. Challenge common misconceptions about dyslexia using evidence based understanding.
  3. Identify signs that a patient or colleague may be dyslexic.
  4. Describe the strengths dyslexic individuals often bring to clinical and non clinical roles.
  5. Apply practical communication and workplace adjustments to support dyslexic patients and team members.
  6. Reflect on how inclusive practice improves patient safety, team wellbeing, and service quality.

Aims

  • Clarify how dyslexia and other neurodivergent profiles influence communication styles about cognitive differences
  • Reflect on how unconscious bias affects interactions with neurodivergent colleagues
  • Explore strategies to create a supportive, inclusive workplace culture.

Developments Outcomes

  • This presentation meets the GDC's development outcomes: A, B and C.

CPD information

Members attend free of charge and receive a CPD certificate (subject to meeting attendance criteria). Non-members - £5 participation fee is required to attend. This includes administration for issuing the CPD certificate.  CPD certificate requires attendee to be present on camera for the full presentation.

 

How much does it cost?

Our Coffee Catch-up sessions are FREE to attend. We welcome all dental nurses, BADN members and non-members, as well as other dental care professionals to join our sessions. Please note spaces are limited so be sure to book early.

What happens after I register?

Once registered a confirmation email will be sent to you within 24 hours. An Invitation Zoom Link along with any other relevant information will be sent to all attendees via email a day before the event. Please also check your spam/junk folder when looking out for any communications.
