Pam Swain – Questions & Answers

Tell us about your early life……

I was born (in May 1958)

and brought up in Fleetwood in Lancashire and stayed there until I left Fleetwood Grammar School at 18, in 1976.

What jobs did you do before you   started working for BADN?

As a teenager, I had the usual jobs – Saturday girl in a beauty salon, waitress, shop assistant, chambermaid……

when I went to Vienna I was an au-pair for a family who had a newsagents, so I worked in their shop and also sold newspapers outside one of Vienna’s main railway stations!

What education/training did you do?

I did the Bilingual Secretary’s Diploma at Blackpool & Fylde College, after a year at Vienna University doing German for Foreigners.  Whilst in Bermuda, I did an investment course and a small business management course at Bermuda College, and also three quarters of the American Institute of Banking Diploma course – I gave it up when I got to the accountancy and economics modules!

In my other life as a holistic therapist, I trained at the Massage Institute of New England in Cambridge, Massachusetts and gained the American Massage Therapy Association Certificate, as well as certification in On-Site Massage and basic training in reflexology, zero balancing, polarity and so on.

What about CPD?

I graduated from the Open University with  a Masters in Business Administration in 2007 and obtained the City & Guilds Licentiate in Management in 2006.  I became a facilitator for the Louise Hay Heal Your Life courses a few years ago.  I’m also a Silva grad (,  having taken the Ultimate Course in Laredo, Texas with Jose Silva himself in 1990.

What other jobs have you had?

I worked briefly for the Home Office Research Unit in London.  I went to Brussels in 1979, where I worked for CPC Europe (the people who made Knorr, Hellmans and Marmite);

in the Hilton International European Area Office in Personnel and then Marketing; then I went to NATO where I worked in Electronic Warfare, and then in the Operations Division.

In 1987 I moved to Bermuda to work in the Investment Department of the Bank of Bermuda

and in 1991 took a year’s sabbatical to train in holistic therapy at MINE.

What posts have you held with BADN?

I was originally employed in 1992 as Executive Secretary (since “uptitled” to Chief Executive!)  and am Executive Editor of the British Dental Nurses’ Journal.

Where do you live now and with whom?

I live in a small two bedroomed terraced house in Fleetwood, just round the corner from our old offices.  I’m one of those sad old biddies who lives alone with her cat!

What about hobbies?

I don’t have a lot of spare time, but I am a Soroptimist, which is an organisation for professional women which raises awareness on issues particularly relevant to women. ( I was President of SI Blackpool & District 2012-2014, and my Presidential charities were Bridge2Aid and the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund.

Other than that, I read a lot (am a big fan of the Darkover novels by Marion Zimmer Bradley, the Pern novels by Anne Macaffrey and the Spenser novels by Robert Parker, but will read almost anything), knit a bit (only easy stuff – but my large white duck seems popular), and enjoy cooking – but am almost permanently on a diet!  Consequently, have recently taken up Pilates and going to the gym.

Tell us five things about yourself that most people probably don’t know

  • I used to belly dance (but not well!)
  • I used to be a size 14!!
  • I did a modelling course at the Lucy Clayton school in London
  • I speak three languages, all with a regional accent – English with a Lancashire accent, German with an Anglo/Viennese accent and French with an Anglo/Belgo/Lebanese accent
  • This year, I want to learn to speak Italian – and to crochet – as well as update my conversational French and German

Personal philosophy?

Trust in God but still tether your camel.
