Tell us about your early life……
I was born in London, where I lived for the first seven years of my life.
We then moved to Walton-on-the-hill in Surrey, and in 1960 went to live in Berkshire.
What jobs did you do before you became a dental nurse?
When I left school, I worked for a company which manufactured aerosolised products. I worked my way up to Quality Control Supervisor and whilst in this position, I studied and passed the Certificate in Quality Control (qualitative & quantitative analysis) with Merit.
I eventually left the company to enlist in the Women’s Royal Army Corps division of the British Army. After passing out, I went on to train as a Physical Training Instructor.
What education/training did you do?
Following my time in the Army, I eventually married and gave birth to a son and daughter and when my children were at the age I felt I could return to work, I decided to become a Dental Nurse. I passed my NEBDN National Certificate in 1988, and have been in the profession now for 27 years.
What about CPD?
After gaining my National Certificate, I studied and passed the Certificate in Oral Health Education (University of Nottingham/Royal Society of Health). I also hold the NEBDN post-qualifications in OHE, Radiography, and Conscious Sedation. When I began to teach, I gained my FAETC and Certificate in Education (FE). I also hold the City and Guilds Licentiateship in Dental Nursing.
What jobs have you had in dental nursing?
I have worked for Glenmore Dental Practice, in Bracknell, since 1987, and became the Practice Manager in 1989. For a number of years, we had a second Practice, Brackenvale Dental Practice, in Maidenhead. I was also the Practice Manager there, and thus split my duties between the two practices.
I am a course tutor for the National Diploma in Dental Nursing which I have now taught for 25 years. I am a serving Examiner on the NEBDN Panel of Examiners for the National Diploma and the Certificate in Oral Health Education.
I am also involved in assisting an expert forensic odontologist with occasional forensic identifications.
What posts have you held with BADN?
I joined BADN in 1988, and in recent years have held positions on Council, first as the Chair of BADN Practice Managers’ and Receptionists’ National Group, and then currently as BADN’s Finance Officer – a post which I have held for five years.
I am a BADN Fellow and received the 2013 BADN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dental Nursing.
