Jason Wong at The Dentistry Show 2017

Jason is the Local Dental Network Chair for NHS England Central Midlands, as well as the Secretary for the Lincolnshire Local Dental Committee and Vice Chair of the Oral Health Promotion Partnership Board in Leicester City. He will be presenting a session entitled “Oral health for the ageing population and the relevance of skill mix with a strong focus on dental nurses”, about which he says:

“Dental nurses are an integral part of the skill mix agenda within dentistry. Oral health care for the ageing population presents an opportunity for dental nurses to take part both in the dental practice setting and in the community.

“As such, there has never been a more exciting time for a career in dental nursing. There is now a realisation that in order to achieve efficiencies, the skill mix agenda should focus as much on the extended duties of dental nurses as they do on dental hygienists and therapists. Dental nurses now have the chance to take on more duties such as oral health education, fluoride varnish application and impression taking, as well as the taking of radiographs and photographs.

“During my lecture, I will review the common challenges and opportunities available to dental nurses, as well as how caring for an ageing population will impact these. I will consider how everything fits into NHS dentistry as well.

“I hope those attending my session will develop an appreciation for the changing patient base and how this affects the whole team. They should also leave with ideas on what preventative steps can be taken for the older demographic, as well as how conditions such as dementia and mental health issues might influence the dental care required.”
