Dental Nurse Lizzie Boon wins ‘Spot the Fake’ Competition

The BDIA is pleased to announce that Lizzie Boon, qualified dental nurse and Quality Assurance Auditor for the National Examining Board of Dental Nurses (NEBDN) has won the latest ‘Spot the Fake’ competition, which was held at BDIA Dental Showcase 2016.

The competition challenged members of the dental team to correctly identify genuine and counterfeit dental devices as part of the BDIA’s award winning Counterfeit and Substandard Instruments and Devices Initiative (CSIDI), which has recently partnered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to help stamp out counterfeit and non-compliant equipment.

As the winner of the competition, Lizzie was awarded £500 to spend with a BDIA member of her choice, and put the money to good use by choosing to purchase subscriptions to Dental Nursing for herself and colleagues at NEBDN.

Commenting on the competition, Lizzie said, “Seeing the fake equipment next to the real thing definitely makes you think about where the products come from and how important it is to purchase quality equipment from a reputable supplier in order to safely protect users and patients”.

The CSIDI campaign continues to highlight the danger of counterfeit and non-compliant dental equipment and the risk involved in purchasing from unknown sources. BDIA Policy and Public Affairs Director, Edmund Proffitt, commented, “Counterfeit dental devices pose a real risk to patients as well as the professionals using them. We’re pleased that the competition and CSIDI campaign have had such a positive response from the dental team and look forward to continuing this important work in partnership with the MHRA”.

BDIA Dental Showcase: Bigger and better than ever

It’s less than 3 days until the biggest and best attended dental trade show in the UK.  Some 12,000 dental professionals and trade visitors are expected at BDIA Dental Showcase on the 22-24 October at the NEC in Birmingham.  It’s the number one event to see what’s new in product and equipment innovation, take advantage of loads of free CPD and to catch up with friends and colleagues.

Get your hands on the latest products

In the area of oral care there’s lots going on with plenty of new innovations to get your hands on and to try.  TePe (Stand N55) will be launching EasyPick™, the latest addition to their interdental cleaning range which is designed to make on-the-go cleaning between the teeth simple and effective.  While Oral B (Stand no: J65 / J95) is the place to find out about new Oral-B 3D Whitestrips, the very latest in effective whitening and stain removal.  Oral-B 3D Whitestrips are thin, flexible strips coated with a special tooth whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide, which effectively whitens teeth, whilst simultaneously removing years of everyday stains caused by the likes of coffee, red wine and smoking.  Designed to conform to the natural shape of the teeth, the individual foil-packaged strips are easy to apply to both lower and upper teeth and only need to be worn for one hour once a day for 14 days or used twice a day for 7 days for faster results.

On Stand N45, Waterpik will demonstrate its range of oral care products, including the innovative Waterpik® Ultra Professional, with its user-friendly design and convenient one-minute timer with 30-second pacer to help patients floss thoroughly.  Also on display will be the Waterpik® Complete Care, which combines sonic brushing with water flossing.  Curaprox (Stand I70) will be presenting their new Black Is White charcoal whitening toothpaste which removes discolouration using activated carbon without abrading or bleaching.  You can also find out about their unique iTop professional seminars which focus on motivating patients to achieve optimum oral health.

Throughout the show Wisdom (Stand G170) will be featuring and sampling the leading Clean Between Interdental Brushes which were recommended by 100% of dental professionals polled.  Clinically proven to reduce gum disease and available in 3 sizes, they have soft and flexible rubber filaments that slide easily between the teeth to remove plaque and food particles and gently massage and stimulate the gums.

Philips Oral Healthcare (Stand K115) is looking to shake up home whitening as we know it.  BDIA Dental Showcase delegates will be the first in the UK to experience a completely new and highly innovative new Zoom! tooth whitening product to be launched at the show which simplifies and will dramatically change patients’ home tooth whitening experience.  This technologically and clinically pioneering new system is likely to change the face of at home whitening as we know it. The new product whitens by 4 shades in 4 days, requires no preparation and minimal practice time.  Also new is a trail blazing new Sonicare brushhead – the AdaptiveClean – which it is not technique-sensitive so is ideal for patients who over-brush or can’t achieve the right brushing methods.  The head removes ten times the amount of plaque from hard to reach areas than a manual brush and the bristle configuration also enables four times more surface contact for a scrupulously in-depth clean.

Free CPD and more

There a loads of free CPD opportunities with on-stand lectures, demonstrations and an extensive programme of mini lectures. For example, you can find out how to get your practice to the top of google ranking and have 5 star reviews at the Attracting new patients from google and websites lecture presented by Dental Focus.  And why posture is so important in the lecture, Ergonomic sitting in dental practice, presented by Salli Systems.

BDIA Dental Showcase is also a great place to enhance your career with lots of careers advice available and the chance to explore personal development opportunities to gain new skills.  Healthcare Learning (Stand J5) is a leading provider of education for healthcare professionals to help them progress in their career from the very beginning.  They provide the facility to create your own learning schedule and upload CPD obtained elsewhere.  And on Stand O15, you can meet the team from Walsall College, an outstanding provider of CPD courses and dental nursing apprenticeships.  Their experience means they are able to respond to the needs of the dental industry, and develop courses to help you upskill.

Nice to see you!

With so many of your colleagues attending, the BDIA is a great place to network and meet other members of professional associations.  As it’s the BADN’s 75th anniversary this year, we’re having a celebratory get together on Saturday 24 October at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel.  Incoming President, Jane Dalgarno, and past BADN Presidents look forward to welcoming you for Afternoon Tea and a glass of bubbly or something non-alcoholic (reservations only – contact Val at the BADN office by noon on Friday 23 October to make a late reservation).

The Inauguration of incoming President Jane Dalgarno will be held in Room 5.6 at the NEC/Showcase at 1030 am on Saturday 24 October (members and non-members welcome), followed by the AGM (current members only –  membership card required for admittance) at 11am.

BDTA Statement on the Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013

From 11 May all dental practices will have to ensure that they comply with The Health and Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare) Regulations 2013 – this means that dental practices must avoid the unnecessary use of sharps.  Where it is not possible avoid the use of medical sharps, the new law requires employers to use ‘safer sharps’ where it is reasonably practicable to do so. A ‘safer sharp’ is defined as one that incorporates features or mechanisms to prevent or minimise the risk of accidental injury.

The biggest issue in the dental sector is the use of syringes and practices will need to ensure that they have adopted safe procedures to comply with the legislation.  Members of the BDTA are happy to work with practices to help with compliance issues and BDTA Executive Director, Tony Reed, comments, ‘The dental supply chain is working hand in hand with dental teams to ensure that surgeries are able to fully meet the requirements of the new Sharp Instruments legislation.’  The industry can offer a range of compliant syringes and dental equipment and Reed adds, “A number of disposable needles and syringes, featuring safety devices to minimise the risk of needle stick injury are already available, with new designs under development”.

Manufacturers and suppliers have new single-use cartridge syringes specifically designed to overcome the risks, but they are not yet widely used in practice. One of the reasons for this may be cost, though trials have found that once the cost of the syringe and its sterilisation had been taken into account, disposable syringes and needles can actually provide a cheaper solution.

The BDTA represents and supports manufacturers and suppliers of dental products, services and technologies, to the benefit of members, the dental profession and the public.  BDTA members gain access to a range of services designed to benefit them and promote the well being of the industry as a whole and the profession gains the reassurance of dealing with like-minded individuals who are committed to providing a high quality standard of service.

The BDTA is a non-profit making organisation which means that any surplus funds generated from activities such as BDTA Dental Showcase are ploughed back into dentistry either directly or by supporting and working with the other professional dental bodies.
