Kathryn Marshall

Having qualified with both hospital and NEBDSA Certificates in 1981, Kathryn went on to obtain the Diploma in Dental Health Education, Certificate in Practice Appraisal, Certificate in Primary Dental Care, Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching and an MSc in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare (Applied Professional Dental Practice), where her dissertation examined the role of the expanded duty dental nurse in the delivery of care to patients.

Kathryn is currently Practice Development and Audit Tutor West Wales and  Professional Support Tutor for the Cardiff University School of Postgraduate Medical & Dental Studies; Training Programme Director of HEKSS/FGDP Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology; and Clinical Advisor and Expert for the GDC.  Former positions include Senior Dental Nurs at Kings COllege School of Medicine and Dentistry, Professional Relations Manager BUPA, and practice manager at two general dental practices.  She was also a NEBDN examiner and a member of the GDC Fitness to Practise panel.

Tell us about your early life……

I grew up in a small village in Wales. Two sisters and some cats – bliss.

What jobs did you do before you   became a dental nurse?

None- except chores for pocket money. I began my training at 17.

What education/training did you do?

Both a hospital and National Certificate, followed by a Dip DHE. Mentoring qualification. Then this last year an MSc in Advanced and Specialist Helathcare.

What about CPD?

loads! Seem to spend my life on a course.

What jobs have you had in dental nursing?

Various positions in hospitals and then Senior Nurse in my husband’s dental practice.

Where do you live now and with whom?

I live back in Wales where I began with my husband and mad black and white cat called Holly

What about hobbies?

Cooking, dancing (Zumba), theatre, walking on the beach, a book club member.

Tell us five things about yourself that most people probably don’t know

I am an expert on the life and works of Richard Burton

I can’t put my head under water

I have VERY small feet

I am a wicked mimic of peoples’ voices and accents

My favorite drink is tea, but I pretend its gin
