Dental professionals must report cases of female genital mutilation

New legal duty applicable to England and Wales

All regulated health and social care professionals in England and Wales, including dentists and dental care professionals, must now comply with the Government’s new mandatory duty to report cases of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Further information about the new duty is available in the Standards section of GDC website, including links to resources and FAQs published by the Government.

GDC Standards require all dental professionals to find out about and follow laws and regulations that affect their work and raise concerns if patients are at risk.

Under the legislation, failure to comply with the new duty may result in an investigation of a dental professional’s fitness to practise.

Information on FGM, signs/symptoms, 24/7 helpline, etc is available on the NSPCC website.  For a statement from the NSPCC’s Head of Helplines, John Cameron, and to download the A4 poster or the wallet card, please click here
