Jean Smith MBE
Margaret Jean Smith, former General Secretary of the Association of British Dental Surgery Assistants (now BADN) and of the National Examining Board for Dental Surgery Assistants (now NEBDN), died on 20 April 2012, aged 88.
Jean’s long career in the dental profession began in the 1940’s in Leyland, Lancashire where she trained as a dental surgery assistant.
Jean joined the Association, which had been formed by local dentist Philip Grundy in 1940, in the late 1940s and was its General Secretary for almost 40 years until 1985.
The Examining Board was formed in 1943 and remained part of the Association until the late 1980s. Jean had a dual role, and after her retirement she continued to work for NEBDN for a number of years.
Her energy and commitment to both organisations and to dental surgery assistants was outstanding and she was awarded an MBE in the 1970’s for her services to the profession.
Her career in dentistry saw a great many challenges and changes in the profession and Jean was at the forefront of many developments for dental surgery assistants during a career spanning more than 40 years.
